"Tech Tips - Subject: Starter Motor Failure

Make: XVS 1100 (1999-2002 Models)

The starter motor used in 1999-2002 XVS 1100 Models may in some instances become damaged by engine kick-back during starting.

Possible causes of kick-back are:

* intake air leak
* Idle speed too low
* Carburetor synchronization is incorrect
* Carburetor mixture is too lean
* Incorrect starting procedure is used

To reduce engine kick-back during starting:

* Confirm no intake air leaks are present
* Adjust the idle speed (950-1050 rpm)
* Synchronize the carburetor
* Adjust the carburetor mixture screw to provide the correct CO (1.5%)
* Educate the consumer about the correct starting procedure (choke and no throttle when cold, no choke and no throttle when warm)

To reduce the possibility of starter motor damage during starting, a torque limiting clutch is now incorporated into the starter motor on 2003 models. The original starter motor 5EL-81890-00-00 has been superceded to the new type starter motor 5EL-81890-01-00 that is equipped with the torque limiting clutch (see illustration below)"

Note: The illustrations simply showed the old and new starters with the location of the torque limiter in the front head of the new starter.
